Too often, great ideas remain dormant due to lack of praise or support from others. To increase team member’s confidence in their own ability to innovate, ensure they know you welcome their thoughts and are open to discussing them further.

Being a creative leader means encouraging risk-taking and taking failure as an opportunity for growth. Furthermore, having a flexible work environment that facilitates innovation should also be part of this equation.

1. Encourage open communication

Promoting open communication is central to encouraging innovation and creativity among your team. However, managers and leaders can hinder this process when they attempt to control what ideas their teams present or when they don’t recognize and value differences in opinions.

Managers can foster creativity and promote an atmosphere of open communication by being good role models by being open to feedback and suggestions from their employees during group meetings or one-on-one conversations. Being responsive to employee comments also fosters psychological safety which is integral to encouraging creativity and innovation.

Employees will be more inclined to share their ideas freely without fear of reprisals from management, making it easier for them to identify any challenges that may hinder creativity or productivity and work with leaders to develop solutions promptly. By doing this, employees can prevent frustration from building and cause them to stop working as hard.

2. Give everyone a voice

If an employee believes their ideas are unappreciated, they won’t feel empowered to find innovative solutions. Give your employees the space and encouragement they need to be creative by creating an open forum where they can freely express themselves; perhaps hosting team brainstorm sessions with ground rules like “no bad ideas”, or offering an ideas box where anyone can contribute at any time.

Creative employees can help your business advance by devising innovative solutions to problems, increasing client/customer retention rates or differentiating products/services from competitors. However, for their creativity to take shape properly your employees must adopt the correct mindset.

At times, employees need relief from a rigid work structure that keeps them at their desk all day. Perhaps they require a day where meetings or emails are eliminated, or an environment which stimulates their creativity. You might also consider hiring people from different backgrounds, experiences levels, skill sets and mentalities in order to bring fresh perspectives to the company.

3. Don’t be afraid to fail

Every year, thousands of consumer products are introduced, yet 95 percent fail. Instead of feeling discouraged by this statistic, managers should encourage employees to be creative and consider innovative ways they can enhance existing offerings of their company.

Fostering creativity and innovation requires not only creating an open environment but also being willing to allow mistakes. Leaders must allocate enough time each day or week for employees to come up with ideas or propose projects, even if they don’t work out as planned.

Employees may be amazed at their own inventiveness when given the chance. Even highly-specialized jobs can still offer unique solutions by developing novel approaches or solving problems in unconventional ways. Managers should allow their teams to work in whatever style best fits them;

4. Get out of the office

“Think outside the box” may sound easy enough, but finding concrete ways to foster creativity can be challenging. One effective strategy for helping team members be creative could include taking them away from the office for brainstorming sessions in different environments; seeing how employees work together may provide inspiration or give you insight into how well your employees collaborate with one another in other environments. You could also try different meeting formats, seating arrangements and inviting external speakers or trainings that encourage their creative side.

Approving flexible working options for your team members is also key for healthy minds. When your staff can enjoy a balanced work-life relationship, their energy can be focused on producing innovative ideas for the company rather than being taken up in other aspects of life.

Along with providing employees the freedom of their own schedules, you can also create a more inspiring work environment by installing private workstations, collaborative tables and an array of writing utensils. Sheets of butcher paper may even be placed on break room tables with various writing utensils for informal brainstorming sessions when your team isn’t on an scheduled call.

5. Be a good leader

An effective team leader must encourage creative thinking and provide resources to their team’s efforts, such as time for brainstorming sessions or training in creativity and problem-solving. A good manager could set aside time for such brainstorming sessions or provide training opportunities on these matters.

Employees are more likely to share ideas if they feel their suggestions will be implemented and leaders should make it a point to implement any viable suggestions, informing the team. Furthermore, leaders should recognise and reward those who come up with new concepts.

Finally, an effective team leader must possess the self-assurance and confidence necessary to stand up for his or her decisions without fear. Otherwise, they could fail to inspire their teams with bold thinking or discourage people from trying innovative solutions. A good leader must provide honest feedback or criticism when necessary while not disrupting team morale; this requires different leadership techniques than command-and-control and micromanaging.
