Yusaku Maezawa is a billionaire who founded Japan’s leading online fashion retail site, Zozotown. Additionally, he has amassed an extensive collection of contemporary art.
Now he is planning to fly into space aboard SpaceX’s Big Falcon Rocket with artists in tow in order to inspire them to create works of art inspired by their experience in lunar orbit.
The Story of Zozotown
Yusaku Maezawa, founder of Japan’s Zozotown fashion mall and owner of an extensive modern art collection, boasts a net worth exceeding $3 billion, making him one of the world’s wealthiest business entrepreneurs. His success story serves as an inspirational lesson for other aspiring entrepreneurs to follow; showing that passion and determination can lead to remarkable accomplishments.
Maezawa began his rise to success while still in high school, when he ditched classes to follow his passion of becoming a drummer in a punk band. Following graduation, he took up selling CDs and merchandise of his favorite bands by mail order before going on to establish Start Today Co. in 1998 – eventually evolving into Zozotown which went public in 2004 – later being listed on both Mothers market for startups (TSE Mothers market) as well as First Section on Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2007.
Initial ventures by Maezawa focused on fashion and music; however, in 2017 he introduced Zozosuit: a body measurement suit which allowed users to upload their measurements and purchase made-to-measure clothing from select brands. Furthermore, Zozomat launched as a service which took users’ feet measurements on paper sheets before creating custom pairs of footwear using these measurements.
Maezawa has not only ventured into fashion retail and art, but is also actively involved with philanthropy and space travel. In 2021 he flew on a Russian Soyuz rocket to the International Space Station for a 12-day voyage and announced plans to establish a museum near Chiba, east of Tokyo, to display his impressive modern art collection.
Maezawa’s journey from high school to the top of business world is an inspiring tale of passion, determination and an innovative mindset resulting in remarkable success. He advises aspiring entrepreneurs to follow their passion and constantly push themselves. By remaining true to themselves and seeking out new opportunities they will eventually achieve everything they desire in life – in the end the rewards will make their hard work worth their while!
The Zozosuit
Yusaku Maezawa’s story stands as an inspirational testament to the value of following your dreams and taking risks. From selling CDs to founding Zozotown, Maezawa has demonstrated how hard work and determination are essential elements for success. His diverse ventures–ranging from fashion to space travel–have left an indelible mark on aspiring entrepreneurs and motivated many others on their quest for glory.
Maezawa first discovered his passion for art during his youth when he founded a mail-order business selling CDs and records from bands he enjoyed listening to. Later he relocated with his then-girlfriend to America’s hardcore punk scene, becoming infatuated with American rock music that wasn’t readily available back home in Japan at that time. Later on Maezawa used this love of music in starting up Start Today in 1998 as an e-commerce company focusing on music-focused e-commerce company before expanding to sell clothing sales as well in 2000 – even attempted by Maezawa himself in 2018 to launch an affordable clothing line under another business name as part of this endeavor!
Maezawa announced in September of 2019 that he would sell Start Today to Yahoo Japan for $2.3 billion as part of an initiative to stimulate growth amid increased competition from Amazon and Rakuten. Following the transaction, Maezawa stepped down as CEO and was replaced by Kotaro Sawada as head of Start Today.
Maezawa saw this acquisition as an invaluable opportunity to diversify his portfolio and utilize his newly found wealth for investments in art and other innovative projects, such as designing a private spacecraft to transport artists on tours around the moon, inspiring creativity while expanding human exploration.
Maezawa’s dearMoon spacecraft will enable him to expand his art collection while making a philanthropic contribution that will change the lives of future creatives. He will assemble an exceptional group of artists–photographers Rhiannon Adam and Karim Iliya, fashion designer/stylist Yemi A.D, BIGBANG rapper T.O.P and space YouTuber Tim Dodd–for an inspiring lunar voyage, hoping they may continue pushing boundaries of human potentiality.
The ZOZO Collection
Yusaku Maezawa has earned himself the reputation as one of the world’s biggest spenders, spending hundreds of millions on everything from Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings and Hermes-upholstered private jets, to Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket ride, to paying down payments on moon voyages aboard Elon’s rocket. Maezawa founded online fashion retail website Zozotown as well as Tokyo-based Contemporary Art Foundation which helps young artists.
At age 18, Maezawa began his music business career by importing CDs and records from America for mailing-order sale as a teenager. Over time, Start Today Inc branched out into other merchandise including furniture and eventually apparel sales through mail-order service. By 2004, he established Zozotown which offers both domestic and international brands through website shopping as well as mail order service; their own line of ZOZO clothing can also be found there as part of Maezawa’s unique marketing strategy; his marketing tool of choice being his unique made-to-measure bodysuit outfitted with sensors he developed himself; this unique marketing tool works alongside an app which takes measurements directly from customers and ensures clothing will fit when ordering clothing online or by phone or mail-order.
Maezawa has become the 22nd richest person in Japan through his success, as an avid collector of contemporary art with his own gallery in Roppongi specializing in Andy Warhol and Takashi Murakami works. Additionally, his interest extends to French modernist design such as vintage 1950s Jean Prouve chairs from France’s modernist movement as well as an expansive Charlotte Perriand table housed within glass partitioned offices on the outskirts of Tokyo.
Maezawa purchased all seats on SpaceX’s inaugural Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) flight to the moon, scheduled for 2023. He hopes that six to eight artists he invites on this voyage can use their experience of lunar orbit to inspire future creative projects; expected attendees include painters, musicians, YouTubers and fashion designers.
Maezawa has long resided in Roppongi and his appreciation of art is deeply connected to its vibrant creative community. His private collection contains works by Japanese, American, European and South Korean artists; in addition he created the ZOZO Museum of Contemporary Art in Roppongi to exhibit and promote these artists’ work.
The ZOZO Art Collection
Yusaku Maezawa, CEO of online clothing retailer Zozotown and collector of contemporary paintings. Last year he made headlines when Elon Musk’s SpaceX named him as its inaugural private passenger for an orbital trip around the moon – but what are his secrets for amassing multibillion-dollar fortune through fashion mail-order business?
Maezawa was born in Chiba, Japan on November 22, 1975. As a child, music played an essential part of his life – from starting his first band in high school and later releasing an EP to abandoning his dream of becoming a professional musician and creating successful businesses such as selling imported CDs via mail order from home (in 1998) before later adapting it into Zozotown fashion retail site.
Zozotown website stands out as an innovative fashion destination by enabling customers to create and use a body measurement suit called ZOZOSUIT that then helps design and purchase custom-fit clothing. Popular among Japanese youth, its global expansion will likely make Zozotown one of the leading players in fashion industry; offshoot ZOZO also sells personalized clothing.
Maezawa is known for his successful online fashion retail business as well as being an avid collector of contemporary art, having established a foundation to foster young artists in Tokyo. Over time he has amassed an extensive art collection including works by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Richard Prince at auctions; more recently he spent $98 million at Christie’s and Sotheby’s sales buying pieces by Alexander Calder, Bruce Nauman, and Adrian Ghenie.
Maezawa has long had a passion for contemporary art, collecting it both professionally and personally – with particular interest in Asian artists. Additionally, he owns an extensive selection of modern and traditional Japanese sculptures which he donates to public museums as well as hosting his own exhibitions of this form in Tokyo.
Maezawa plans on taking six to eight world-renowned artists with him when he embarks on his lunar mission, set for launch in 2023. He hopes their space voyage will inspire them to create projects that benefit humanity.
