Lee assumed the chairmanship of Samsung in 1987 and immediately began diversifying the conglomerate his father had built from a noodle trading business into electronics, life insurance, construction, shipbuilding, finance and aggressively invested in new businesses, including semiconductors.
He was known for being a strict yet resolute leader who focused on grand strategies while leaving day-to-day management to his executives. In 1993, his “new management declaration” marked the start of a dramatic restructuring effort at the company.
1. Creating a Culture of Innovation
Lee Kun-hee was the third son of Lee Byung-chul, the man responsible for founding Samsung in 1938. Lee took over leadership of his family business shortly thereafter in 1972 and quickly transitioned it to electronics and semiconductor markets. Thanks to Lee’s commitment to technological progress, Samsung overtook rivals Sony and Panasonic and became a global leader in dynamic random-access memory chips (DRAM).
Hardworking and ambitious manager, the late chairman was known for taking extended trips to Hawaii and Japan before making key business decisions. Additionally, he was an avid sports fan – riding horses and racing exotic cars on a private race track were just among his interests.
As soon as he became chairman, Samsung was seen as producing subpar products, so he initiated an ambitious reform drive to address it. To demonstrate his message of change he ordered all 150,000 mobile phones currently for sale to be collected and burned – this act was later seen as shock therapy that helped pave the way for Anycall handset.
Lee changed the company’s hierarchical structure by instituting an authoritarian management style. He stressed quality over quantity, encouraged innovation and encouraged employees to report any mistakes they saw; calling for what he dubbed “new management”, with an aim of creating an organization with an obvious vision and set of values for its future success.
Lee was an advocate of South Korea’s free market economy, yet also supported a range of government-backed industrial policies designed to assist companies’ expansion – this included relaxing restrictions on foreign investments and imports. Furthermore, he participated in various political activities; for example advising former president Roh Tae-woo.
Lee passed away from a heart attack in 2014, yet his innovative management philosophy lives on in Samsung as one of the largest family-run industrial groups worldwide. Samsung products like smartphones and flat-screen TVs remain among its most sought-after offerings; its fusion semiconductors power everything from personal computers to AI systems.
2. Embracing Technology

Lee dreamed of creating a technology company to rival Sony and Apple by emphasizing research and development; by expanding their product offering from TVs, microwave ovens, mobile phones to semiconductors the family business had become world renowned.
Samsung’s innovation approach has evolved from closed to open over time with the goal of becoming the most groundbreaking tech company on Earth. To this end, they have established internal processes such as speed management and diversified structures capable of handling all matters within the organization, while creating synergies across internal organizations. Furthermore, partnerships have been formed with outside companies or acquisitions like U.S. chipmaker AST Research or German camera maker Rollei Cameramaker were acquired.
As our world moves toward new technologies like 5G, artificial intelligence and robotics, businesses must embrace these trends by developing strategies that enable them to take full advantage of these opportunities – such as creating strong partnerships with software developers, service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers to ensure an effortless user experience.
At Bloomberg Live: The Year Ahead conference in New York, David Eun, President and Chief Innovation Officer for Samsung Electronics’s NEXT unit and Chief Innovation Officer shared how their company is adapting to emerging trends by expanding research capabilities, investing in startups that foster innovation, collaborating with other firms and expanding collaborative relationships – these methods allow the firm to quickly recognize emerging technologies and make necessary investments that ensure it remains ahead of its rivals.
3. Investing in the Future
Samsung is an industry leader, but to stay at the top, they actively seek new challenges and opportunities to remain at the top. Their focus on new product categories as well as partnerships with emerging challengers has been essential to their success.
Samsung’s recent investments reflect this approach, investing in cutting-edge technologies to develop products and experiences tailored to its future needs. This strategy extends to its Silicon Valley operations where they have assembled an expert team to cultivate new technologies capable of revolutionizing operations and business models within Samsung itself.
One such example of Samsung’s innovation can be seen through their development of a chip cluster to compete against Intel and Qualcomm in the mobile phone market, helping reduce Samsung’s reliance on Qualcomm for modems while creating more defensible positions as it moves into new markets and deals with suppliers.
Samsung recently made an investment in both augmented and virtual reality technology – two key areas that could transform how we live and work. Working alongside partners such as Apple and Google, they are developing apps for AR that enable users to experience holograms and the metaverse like never before.
As part of its investment in manufacturing’s future, the company is making substantial strides toward automating much of the work performed at existing facilities while expanding production capacities at Austin, Texas based factory robots will handle most manufacturing operations while humans handle more intricate tasks and quality assurance measures. This move marks an optimistic bet on an automated factory future involving automated factory robots handling bulk of production operations with humans being needed only for more complex tasks and quality assurance duties.
Lee Kun-hee’s vision for Samsung was ambitious. He wanted the company to expand into multiple new areas, such as automobile manufacturing. Additionally, his goal was to produce 20 percent of Samsung products outside South Korea by 2000 – this goal could only be accomplished with plants in England and China, along with acquisitions such as AST Research and Rollei Camera in Germany. Lee Kun-hee was known for taking bold risks when investing in new businesses – this helped transform Lee Byung-chul’s modest trading company into a powerful global conglomerate worth $375 billion across electronics manufacturing, insurance policies, semiconductor production, semiconductor fabrication, semiconductor production as well as shipbuilding industries.
4. Developing Employees
Samsung may boast an enviable history of producing market-leading products, but that shouldn’t stop it from innovating and looking ahead. One way Samsung does this is by encouraging employees to think outside of the box and express their creativity.
C-Lab program provides employees with an opportunity to devote one year of their work time away from their regular roles to developing personal projects that could make a real impactful difference in the world, all while simultaneously developing skills useful in everyday work life. All sides benefit equally – everyone wins in this situation.
Samsung offers several programs designed to help its employees develop and reach their full potential, such as C-Lab and Talent Audition, which enable employees to suggest ideas they think could make a difference within the organization. After selecting those with potential, mentorship and financial assistance are offered so their ideas become reality.
Samsung supports employees in leading healthy lives by offering on-site medical facilities, such as family medicine, dermatology and otolaryngology clinics as well as fitness facilities like an in-house fitness center, swimming pool and spinning classes. Furthermore, flexible working arrangements and open communication help promote overall employee well-being at work.
Samsung knows its people are the foundation of its success, which is why they invest heavily in developing their talents. Through programs that allow employees to take time off for family matters or pursue hobbies like music, painting and sports, as well as education and training programs designed to hone leadership abilities such as its extensive employee volunteer program allowing its employees to give back to the community, Samsung recognizes that its people are key.
