Backrub
Two Stanford PhD students’ journey in turning their research project into one of the world’s most influential tech companies is an inspiring tale of innovation. Google’s rise is proof of how groundbreaking technologies can transform lives.
In 1996, Stanford University graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page unveiled BackRub, an innovative search engine designed to capitalize on the Web’s increasing popularity. Unlike existing technologies, BackRub relied heavily on backlinks as its basis for relevance evaluation – this approach proved more accurate and efficient than search engines that relied more heavily on how often a keyword had appeared on pages than BackRub did.
BackRub’s index had grown rapidly over time, reaching 75 million pages and taking up 207 GB of hard space. When its servers became too bandwidth-intensive for campus lab computers to handle, the team searched for alternate locations – including Page and Brin’s garage friend’s garage – as possible solutions.
Koller reports that Google was named during one of these brainstorm sessions, following discussions among its founding team. To reflect the enormous volume of data they were indexing, their goal was for its name to reflect this massive volume; Googol–an acronym representing one followed by 100 zeroes–was proposed but eventually changed to Google by its founders.
Google Search
Google Search was initially founded by two Stanford University PhD students as an internet search service in 1998 and has become an overwhelmingly powerful technology company with millions of daily users globally. Products range from mobile operating system Android to virtual reality software Google Earth that are used by millions.
BackRub was their answer. Page and Brin recognized that the internet was growing so quickly that it would become impossible to manually review all of its information; to solve this challenge, they created PageRank as a system for ranking web pages by their frequency of reference or linking from other sites; this algorithm became pivotal in Google’s future success.
By 1998, Page and Brin had drawn in investors such as Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim to fund Google Inc, then relocated from their dorm room into Susan Wojcicki’s garage (later CEO of YouTube) in Menlo Park, California where their team gradually began to flourish with creaky desktop computers and ping-pong tables providing space to grow.
Eric Schmidt was hired as Google’s new CEO in 2001 and soon thereafter quickly spearheaded its rapid expansion. By 2011, it had handled over 100 million searches daily with “to google” becoming an everyday verb.
Google Maps
Google takes an iterative approach to product development, offering new features to users early and using feedback to refine them. This strategy has proven highly successful with products like the Chromecast and Pixel smartphone lineup; Google also leverages DeepMind, its artificial intelligence subsidiary, to develop other systems such as voice recognition and speech synthesis systems.

Boasting everything from satellite imagery to real-time traffic updates and being updated constantly with fresh data and features – Google Maps has become a travel essential for billions around the globe.
Google’s success in developing successful navigational applications rests upon their extensive use of data gleaned from various sources, combining previous app users’ information with that from cars and satellites as well as its close ties with government institutions that give access to an abundance of mapping data. When combined with sophisticated algorithms, this allows Google Maps to deliver accurate answers quickly to user inquiries – thus becoming the world’s go-to navigational application.
Google AdWords
Google introduced AdWords as an advertising system in 2000, allowing businesses to create and manage ads based on cost-per-click (CPC) advertising models. AdWords introduced relevance into digital advertising for the first time and ensured Google’s success within it.
Google also introduced PageRank, a groundbreaking ranking algorithm which considered factors like website popularity and links when ranking search results, helping ensure users received relevant and useful results instead of an assortment of random websites.
Google is well known for making adjustments to its products to keep them competitive, with changes frequently made to search ads to stay ahead of competitors.
In 2016, Google introduced Expanded Text Ads with two headlines and longer descriptions, as well as Click-to-Message ads that let consumers reach businesses without visiting their websites. By 2018, the name had been changed from AdWords to Google Ads to reflect that its focus had broadened beyond search ads; additional enhancements included more accurate Quality Scores as well as targeting ads directly onto mobile devices.
Google Analytics
Google has built its success upon two principles. The first is quickly getting products into beta testing with user data; and second is using its self-serve ad network to generate revenue, funding innovative ideas even when their return isn’t immediately evident. In 2019, they also launched “App + Web” property types to meet cross-platform measurement needs of many brands using GA and Firebase Analytics; later unified into Universal Analytics platform by 2022.
Google AdSense
Google has become a global technology powerhouse with its innovative product lineup and service offering, but its future direction remains unknown. Part of its success comes from Blue Ocean innovation – discovering uncontested markets and producing products tailored specifically for them – like tools to find hiking trails and outdoor activities beyond search.
Three years after introducing its search engine, Google took the first steps toward monetising its position by unveiling AdWords as an advertising model that allowed it to diversify revenue away from search. AdWords successfully demonstrated how successful diversifying revenue could be for Google.
Google fosters an environment in which employees are encouraged to explore innovations regardless of their immediate monetization potential, similar to Facebook’s now defunct credo of “move fast and break things.” Google believes that breakthroughs often come from individuals with extensive technical knowledge; as soon as new services or products hit the market, feedback is used to refine them closer towards perfection.
Google Cloud
Google Cloud Computing can offer enterprises many advantages. It provides fast performance at lower costs than traditional data centers, as well as having a robust security infrastructure which uses encryption technology and redundant backups to protect against data loss.
